The first Ford car designed specifically for Europe was the 8 hp Model Y, introduced in 1932. In 1935 progressive price reductions culminated in the announcement of the £100 Model Y "Popular", the first and only fully-equipped saloon ever sold at this price.
The car (displaying no. 93) was about to take part in the September 1933 72-hours Dependability Demonstration. Some 150 Ford dealers across Great Britain and the Irish Free State started engines in their Model 'Y's at 5.30 p.m.on Monday 11th and kept them running until 5.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 14th September. Some dealers were very adventurous and drove their cars for miles during the period. Needless to say, local newspapers reported on their local dealer's achievement, which was the main aim of the exercise, to promote the Model 'Y' as the country came out of the Great Depression following the Wall Street Crash of 1929. - with thanks to Sam Roberts www.fordyandcmodelregister.co.uk
